Christophe Lemaitre: “The most important is yet to come”

July 15, 2010, 12:54am

Christophe Lemaitre entered into the history books on Friday 9th July, going below the 10 second mark in the 100 m for the first time. In Valence, at the French Elite Championships, he ran along the straight in a time of 9’’98, a time synonymous with the national record. Four days after his exploit, the young athlete from AS Aix-les-Bains had a meeting with the press at the ASICS showroom, is brand equipment for 4 years , his kit provider since he was a teenager, in the 2nd district of Paris. Accompanied by his coach, Pierre Carraz, Christophe Lemaitre responded to the flood of questions from forty or so journalists from the printed press, web and audiovisual sectors. Extracts.

With the benefit of a few days’ hindsight, what inspired your performance in the 100 m in the French Championships?

Christophe Lemaitre: I was aware that I’d done something outstanding. However, I also know, having had the chance to review my race on video, that I’ve still got a way to go to perfect my run. By running under 10 seconds in the 100 m, I crossed a barrier. I’m deeply satisfied. However, the best is yet to come, starting with the European Championships in Barcelona at the end of July.

You’ve reviewed your record race at the French championships. What did you think of it?

It’s still far from perfect. My start wasn’t the best it could be. I also made a few technical errors in my final strides. My coach, Pierre Carraz, deemed them to be a bit too long. I can work on perfecting all that. On the other hand I’m more satisfied on a technical level with my 200 m final, where I equalled the French record in a time of 20’’16.

Your margin for improvement remains considerable then?

Of course. I’m still young (20 years old). I lack experience and I’ve got it all to learn. I know that I can go fast. How quick I don’t know. And I don’t want to focus too much on one time or another. I must continue to work and remain concentrated on my goal, without spreading myself too thinly, in the hope that my time will continue to drop away.

Your coach indicated that a time of 9’’92 was possible in the 100 m. Does such a performance seem reasonable to you?

Yes, 9’’92 constitutes a time that is within my reach. When I look back at my races, I tell myself that there are hundredths of a second to eat away at virtually everywhere.

Having crossed the 10 second barrier in the 100 m, does that lift a weight from your shoulders?

It doesn’t lift a weight from my shoulders as I’ve never obsessed about it. My approach to competition will always be the same. I’m not going to change my objective. I’m still targeting the European title in Barcelona, telling myself that the time is bound to follow suit. However, it’s true that I’ve freed myself of this 10 second barrier so now I can concentrate on hunting down titles.

Since your exploit in the French championships, the press keeps emphasising the fact that you’ve become the first white guy to run the 100 m in under 10 seconds. What sentiment does this historic reference inspire in you?

A lot was said about this when I was coming close to it and even more has been said about it since I erased this barrier. I don’t really like talking about it too much though. In my eyes, sprinting has never been a matter of skin colour. If I’ve got to this stage today it’s because of my work and my willpower.

On Friday 16th July you’re going to compete in the 100 m in the Meeting Areva, at the Stade de France, between Usain Bolt and Asafa Powell. What are you expecting from this race?

I’m very eager to compete against them. I consider it as an opportunity to test myself prior to the European Championship, and to gain experience. Over the past few years, I’ve often missed out on opportunities to come face to face with top level adversaries. I’m sure that this type of confrontation can help me progress. Furthermore, by being placed between the two Jamaicans, I should immediately be able to be in on the action.

On his arrival in Paris on Monday 12th July, Usain Bolt admitted that you were now up there with the big boys. Are you inspired by such a comment from the best sprinter on the planet?

I’m already a bit surprised and at the same time very satisfied that he knows my name and knows about my performance. However, I think it’s premature to say that I’m up there with the big boys. 9’’98 remains a long way off the very top level in the world. With such a time you can’t compete for an Olympic or World podium.

What are you hoping for from the European Championships in Barcelona?

I’m aiming for a medal, or even a title in the 100 m and 4x100 m. For the time being my participation in the 200 m is still to be confirmed. My coach and I will decide when the moment comes, depending on how I feel, my recovery time and my result in the 100 m. If I’m disappointed by my performance in that race then it’s likely that I’ll line up for the 200 m, with the hope of redeeming myself.

Three questions to Pierre Carraz, coach to Christophe Lemaitre

Pierre, how long ago did you meet Christophe ?

In the early days of his athletics. He had taken part in a village fete in September, where he demonstrated his speed qualities on the so called straight piece of track, which was both twisted and hilly. He was 14 years of age and only just discovering athletics after an unfortunate experience in collective sports, where he proved to be awkward and clumsy. After fifteen days, he managed to run the 100 m in 11’’80. A month later he was at 11’’40.

What are his main qualities ?

Plainly he has muscles which are rich in fast fibres. He’s tall. He quickly takes onboard coaching advice. Furthermore Christophe is crazy for competition. He likes the stakes that are at play. This is borne out by the fact that he’s always beaten his personal best times in a big championship.

How far can he go ?

I’ve no idea. Nobody today can predict how much potential he has. Over 100 m, I think he’s capable of running 9’’92 very soon. When he ran 10’’04 last year, there was no wind. With a steady wind of 1.50 m/sec, the gain would be in the order of 7 hundredths of a second. Over 200 m, I can confirm that he’ll soon run a time of under 20 seconds.

Friedrich is back flying again in Heusden

July 11, 2010, 11:11am

Germany’s Ariane Friedrich broke a few local hearts when she won the women’s High Jump at the KBC-Nacht meeting in the Belgian town of Heusden-Zolder, a European Athletics Outdoor Premium Meeting, on Saturday night.

The 2009 European Athletics Indoor Championships gold medallist cleared 2.02m, the second best height by a European jumper this summer, to advertise that she is now completely cured of the various injury problems that brought her indoor campaign to a premature end.

“I’m back on track,” said the delighted Friedrich. “I felt this was my first competition of the year. I’ve jumped three times before today and they didn’t go the way that I wanted but I’m satisfied with this even though I know that my jump at 2.02m was technically not very good and I just got over the bar on speed and courage.” Read more

Borzakovskiy looks ahead to Barcelona

July 8, 2010, 7:39am

One of their most inspirational triumphs came from the 2004 Olympic Games 800m winner Yuriy Borzakovskiy, who decided to make his summer debut over two laps of the track at the Championships and won in impressive fashion in 1:45.41. Borzakovskiy will go to the European Athletics Championships in Barcelona later this month as one of the gold medal favourites for the 800m.

Q) You won in Bergen by running from the front for the entire race. What made you choose these tactics?

A) In a race like this there were 12 people and I decided that I would not be able to get around everyone, using my usual tactics (of hanging back and then accelerating with 150m to go). My coach gave me the instruction to get to the front as quickly as possibly and then just keep on running. For my first start of the season, it felt good although it’s true that it was unusual for me to run from the front, it’s been quite a while since I did that.

Q) You didn’t compete at the SPAR European Team Championship in 2009 so do you like the new format?

A) Yes, I also liked it before when it was called the European Cup and in many respects the essence of the competition has remained roughly the same for me. The main difference to me is that now the men’s and women’s teams score in the same competition and this, for me, has a special meaning.

Lowe prevails over Hellebaut in stormy Madrid

July 3, 2010, 4:43am

American Chaunte Lowe spoiled the comeback of Belgium’s reigning Olympic High Jump champion Tia Hellebaut with another 2.00m clearance to highlight a stormy ‘Meeting de Atletismo Madrid 2010’ on Friday (2) evening, the 10th meeting of the IAAF World Challenge 2010.

Extremely difficult conditions, which included storms and strong gusting winds, hampered the competition, resulting in delays of more than ninety minutes and the breakdown of the timing equipment.

Lowe over 2m again, Hellebaut returns with 1.95m
Lowe, the world leader at 2.05m, had an early scare, needing a second go at her opening height of 1.83 on the wet surface. Hellebaut cleared that height and also 1.86m with ease in her first official jumps in nearly 22 months. The Belgian’s needed a second try at 1.89m and followed up with a first-time clearance over 1.92m.

Meanwhile, the in-form Lowe then produced a clean card through 1.95m, a height Hellebaut managed on her second try. It appeared that 1.98m would be the evening’s closing height with Hellebaut bowing out and Lowe needing a third try before succeeding. Read more

European champion Howe is back with 8.16m

July 2, 2010, 1:45am

The first day of 100th Italian Championships, held in the picturesque Tuscany town of Grosseto, saw the 2006 European Athletics Championships Long Jump gold medallist Andrew Howe return to form with a winning leap of 8.16m on Wednesday.

Howe, on the road to making a complete recover from the injury problems which have plagued him for the last two years, had not jumped since last August and only previously competed in sprint races this summer. His winning effort came in the last round and he also had an 8.05m effort earlier in the competition. However, he was pushed to the limit and had to show his best competitive instincts because, in second place, Emanuelle Formichetti improved his personal best from 7.84m to 8.10m in the last round. Reigning European 1500m champion Mehdi Baala drops out on Barcelona 2010

July 1, 2010, 4:12pm

One day after the publication of the B10 Newsletter-Interview with Mehdi Baala, the Frenchman has announced that he is forced to drop out on the European Athletics Championships Barcelona 2010, meaning that he is not going to be able to defend his Göteborg 2006 title over 1500 metres due to an Achilles tendon injury.

Baala already won continental gold at Munich 2002 and aimed the third consecutive title at Barcelona 2010. 32-years-old, the formidable athlete is a big loss for the French squad. “Being forced to limit my training to jogging for several months, the intensive care allowed me to start preparing in mid-May. I was very optimistic about the training progress which made me look forward to July”, explained Baala about his interrupted preparation. Read more

Mekhissi-Benabbad sets 2000m Steeplechase world best

June 30, 2010, 1:50am

France’s Mahiedine Mekhissi-Benabbad improved the 2000m Steeplechase world best to 5:10.68 at the 4th Alma Athle Tour meeting on home soil in Reims on Wednesday.

The 2008 Olympic Games 3000m silver medallist took nearly three second off the former best on 5:13.47, set just five days ago in Nancy by his compatriot and rival Bob Tahri, setting up a battle-royal in the race for the gold medal at the European Athletics Championships later this month.

The 2010 European Athletics Championships will be held in Barcelona between 26 July and 1 August.  “I’m very proud of what I did, and doing it on French soil is beautiful. This is my first record for the 2000m Steeplechase. In France, we now have currently the two best runners in the steeplechase world and, of course, there is a very strong rivalry,” said Mekhissi-Benabbad after the event.   Read more

Greek heptathletes and Polish decathletes take victories first League

June 25, 2010, 10:12am

The Greek women and the Polish men celebrated First League victories for the European Cup Combined Events in the Fanny Blankers-Koen stadium. Together with the Dutch women and the Czech men they gained promotion to the 2011 Super League. The men from Romania and Hungary, who gained promotion last year, will have to return to the Second League. The same happened to the Austrian women, but new First Leaguer Hungary just edged Spain to stay at the higher level.

Women
Led by inspired performances by Remona Fransen and Nadine Broersen, the Dutch team led the team competition until the sixth event, albeit with full knowledge the competition was predicted to be stronger in both Javelin and the 800 metres. With very strong second days, Sofía Ifadídou and Aryiró Stratáki from Greece propelled themselves to third and fourth place individually (with scores of 5931 and 5888 respectively). At the top of the ranking, however, Fransen and Belarus Yana Maksima managed to fight off that surge. Fransen indeed won in front of her home crowd, improving her personal best (only two months old at the Hypo Meeting in Götzis) from 5831 to 5993. The 24-year old fell just short of the 6,000 points threshold and also missed the tough Dutch qualifying mark for the European Championships in Barcelona (6,070 points). Read more
